There Was No Homeless Problem

Updated: Aug 15

I was born in 1952. One thing i NEVER saw growing up was a homeless person.Nobody was putting up a tent, hanging around in the streets or loitering around the business district.

There were no encampments. It was unheard of.I do recall sometime after high school graduation in 1970 people were no longer going to be institutionalized.

We're talking about people with mental health or behavioral issues that couldn't take care of themsleves. The political elite and academia claimed they were having their rights violated and locking them up was not compassionate. Now homelessness is an epidemic we haven't been able to cure.

Many of these people can't take care of themselves(obviously). Some are addicted to substances. Others are mentally ill. Some may be down on their luck and just can't dig their way out.

Whatever the reason it's not compassion to leave them out there where they are a danger to themselves. We always go to extremes. We went from everyone locked

up to nobody is locked up.

Understand that by locked up i mean placed in a secure facility and treating mental illness.. I'm not talking about prison here.

President Trump promised to have the homeless in DC removed. They would be offered shelter, treatment if necessary or face imprisonment with a fine. The 3 options would be offered to them; the encampments were done regardless.

Good for the homeless, good for the DC residents and good for the city as a whole.

The initiative is an integral part of Pres. Trump's plans for the capital city.

You can't think of your city without the homeless."Back in the day" I couldn't have entertained the thought of encampments of homeless anywhere especially in our own capital.

If you had told me back when i was in high school this would happen one day i would have said you were nuts.

What that suggests is that having homeless people living on our streets isn't necessary.

The Era of the Hobo

"The Panic of 1873 and the depression that followed led men to climb aboard the freight trains in search of work. Jumping on slow-moving freights, they moved across the country following the different harvest seasons or working in mining or lumber camps.

The situation repeated itself with the Great Depression of the 1930s. Thousands of men in search of work took to the rails and roads".

The hobo was for all intents and purposes a migrant worker;somewhat different from the migrant worker we have today and not exactly like our homeless population either. They were a little of both. They lived without a home but their goal was to get work. The subculture of the hobo has been romanticized over the years.

By the time i was born the hobo era had passed and the homeless problem hadn't hit the streets yet.

The homeless don't vote so i don't suppose the political class in DC cares one way or the other what happens to them. Trump has taken steps to get them help and clean up our cities.

Lets' give Trump credit for at least making an effort to solve it as best as possible. Sorry there are no perfect answers but letting them suffer and wrecking our cities is not a solution. IMHO there's nothing worse than fake compassion and the Dems are good at it.
