Trump and Putin knew better than getting the media involved. You don't do negotiations in front of the press. Terrible idea.
You keep it close to the chest.
We all hoped for a break through but making an issue of no deal on this first meeting between 1 of the 2 parties involved is flat out stupid.
You don't meet to get a deal. You have an initial meeting to see if you can get a deal and the deal has to include the other party. I didn't see Zelensky in Alaska sitting across the table.
It's going to take more than 1 meeting to iron it out and get the conditions in writing. I'm sure Trump made his wishes known to Putin. I'm sure Putin let Trump know where he stood and what he expected.
The media is just going to sit there and ask gotcha questions anyway. The editorial is going to spin it against Trump no matter what; not productive.
Trump reminded them it was their Russia Collusion LIE in his 1st term that made negotiations with Russia difficult, if not impossible.
When Biden came into office in 2020 he told Russia that a small incursion into Ukraine would be ok. I'm making this up? Nope. It's in video. He said it publicly.
Anotherwords, he gave Putin permission to invade and then looked the other way. Biden was never engaged. He was out in la la land for 4 yrs. The media covered up
for him. I wouldn't tell these ppl a thing
.
They take their marching orders and read a script. You trust them?
The Ukraine War is too serious to let them get involved.I had no expectations for this first meeting. I'm thankful they had it but i figured the bar would be set too high.Putin said they had an agreement. Trump said there was no deal until they had a deal.
I bet Putin read the room wrong. I'm more inclined to believe Trump. I'd wait and see if he puts more sanctions on Russia and/or lets Ukraine get more weapons.
Zelensky and Putin are the 2 worst people to deal with [stating the obvious].
My own mind set is St Augustine's Just War theory.
The just war doctrine of the Catholic Church found in the 1992 Catechism of the Catholic Church, in paragraph 2309, lists four strict conditions for "legitimate defense by military force:"[38][39]
The damage inflicted by the aggressor on the nation or community of nations must be lasting, grave and certain.
All other means of putting an end to it must have been shown to be impractical or ineffective.
There must be serious prospects of success.
The use of arms must not produce evils and disorders graver than the evil to be eliminated.
I'm definitely not an isolationist but i don't think we need to be involved every time we turn around either.
I'm definitely not a pacifist. either. You could say that when i was a young liberal Democrat.
I opposed all war though i can't say as i knew why. Now i realize you have to be able to stand up for what is right.
Some on the right might call me a neo con. Not everyone who supports military force is a neo con.
Diplomacy doesn't always succeed. It's always worth a try but there are evil leaders in the world that don't understand anything but the use of force. I know this; weakness invites aggression.
Biden was as weak as it gets. I had no faith in Bush's nation building either. It doesn't work. You can't impose our way of life on people who have no interest in our way of life.People will fight for what they believe in.
Bush Sr. had it right in the 1st Gulf War. Bush Jr was a screw up.
Trump is closer to the Reagan model. Peace through strength. Obama depleted our military. Trump is heavily invested in building it back up. Trump is no isolationist but he's no so called neocon either. Some people get upset with him thinking he's one or the other.
It's a lack of understanding on their part. Once you get what is really a limited use of force-he's not going to jump into every conflict- you get a more realistic pov of where he stands.I trust his judgement. If I didn't I wouldn't have voted for him in the 1st place.
I remember that Trump strongly opposed the Iraq War. He's no George W. fan [period] and we all know the feeling is mutual.

Statement from President Trump on Truth Social Re the Alaska meeting with Putin.
"A great and very successful day in Alaska! The meeting with President Vladimir Putin of Russia went very well, as did a late night phone call with President Zelensky of Ukraine, and various European Leaders, including the highly respected Secretary General of NATO. It was determined by all that the best way to end the horrific war between Russia and Ukraine is to go directly to a Peace Agreement, which would end the war, and not a mere Ceasefire Agreement, which often times do not hold up. President Zelensky will be coming to D.C., the Oval Office, on Monday afternoon. If all works out, we will then schedule a meeting with President Putin. Potentially, millions of people’s lives will be saved. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
